Altcar - Combined Cadet Force
Here at The De La Salle Academy, we have been working collaboratively with the Royal Marines to establish a fully functioning Combined Cadet Force. Starting in September with eight students, who passed the stringent selection process, and are now senior cadets, we have grown in strength to a section of twenty eight Royal Marine Cadets. The Cadets have completed a selection day, an application and induction period to hone their skills and attitude to the standard required of a Royal Marine Cadet. The Cadets are expected to overcome, respond and adapt to all situations, whilst ‘making humour the heart of morale.’
On the 12th of February, the Cadets attended their first field day at Altcar Rifle Range, in Formby. The boys spent time out of school: perfecting their military drill; firing on an air rifle range; completing the military Royal Marine fitness tests; thinking about firing positions and adapting to living in the field. Jack Bishop, Year 8, was outstanding in the fitness testing, where he met the Royal Marine recruitment standard for the running and the obstacle course. Others found their strengths in other areas. Anthony McLean demonstrated his outstanding leadership skills, taking charge of drill and ensuring that the boys were disciplined in their approach, at all times. Cameron Maddock, Alex Jimoh and Josh Corkish were extremely thorough when building accommodation in the forest. As you can see from the pictures- they were very proud!
The Cadets had really enjoyable day in the field and have gained a lot of transferrable skills, including a ‘can do’ attitude that we, as a school, hope to see on a daily basis around the Academy.
