## Maths Overview

The Maths Department encourages students to achieve the highest possible standards and develop the ability to work independently. Our aims are:

GCSE study begins in Year 9. Students follow the EdExcel specification for Mathematics. Assessment is linear and takes place at the end of Year 11. Students sit three examinations covering non-calculator and calculator skills and a third examination focused on problem solving. Questions in each examination are designed to assess students understanding of the applications of Mathematics as well as the concepts involved.

Homework is set in line with the school policy. To support our students towards preparing for the GCSE from the start of their studies we have bought into the website

- To encourage an appreciation of the subject and enable students to become independent learners.
- To increase motivation by providing authentic, meaningful and relevant learning experiences through STEM and Financial elements of learning.
- To ensure deeper understanding of maths topics by frequent revisiting and practice.

Homework is set in line with the school policy. To support our students towards preparing for the GCSE from the start of their studies we have bought into the website

**Pearson Active Learn**. This website allows appropriate homework to be set and has tutorial support too. Students who do not have access to the internet at home can use school facilities during lunch or after school. In addition extra classes are provided for Year 11 students to prepare them for the exam. This year these lessons take place after school on a Monday evening until 4pm.## Curriculum Overview
